Abbey Lincoln

We'll be taking a listen to one of the most distinctive Jazz vocalists of all time in our artist spotlight this week.  Abbey Lincoln's dedication to a singular sound made her a favorite among fans.  She was a gifted songwriter, and her personal crusade for civil rights was often the subject matter for her interesting compositions.  She was also an actress, appearing in several high-profile motion pictures during her long career.

The rich tone of Lincoln's dynamic voice was her trademark, but it was her range and inflection that defined her musical personality.  She was able to take highly emotional songs to new heights with her ability to scream, moan, and growl - especially in her former husband, Max Roach's sextet on the album "We Insist!"
