At 93 years old, Gerald Wilson is vibrant as ever. The trumpeter, pianist, bandleader and composer has lived a long, storied career creating dynamic music for decades now.
Known primarily for his work with big bands, Wilson took a bit of a different tack than his peers in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. His arrangements and compositions are rooted in swing and bop, but also possess dynamic nuance, with different “feels” relatable at times to classical music, or to soul and R&B tinges.
His fine recordings for the Pacific Jazz record label are cherished by Jazz fans and collectors., and Wilson’s recent work over the last decade demonstrate that this composer hasn’t skipped a beat – getting better with age.
